If your partner wants to break up after every fight, this means there’s likely something quite wrong in the relationship. Fighting is a normal part of any relationship. But, it’s frustrating if your partner threatens to leave after every disagreement.

While this may be a sign that the relationship isn’t working out, there are a few things you can do. As with most relationship problems, remember that communication is key!

What are you Fighting About?

Start by taking a moment to reflect on your fights, especially the bigger ones. Have you been fighting more recently? Is there a root issue that keeps getting brought up in arguments?

Try to address the underlying issues in your relationship that are causing these fights. Your partner may be sick of fighting over the same things. As a result, they see ending the relationship as the best course of action.

By looking at this from the root of the problem, you can get a better view of how to move forward. If you’ve been fighting over the same thing for a while and can’t come to an agreement, that’s not a great sign. But, if you can resolve the problem, then you may be able to get to a more stable place in your relationship.

Figure Out Why They Want to Break Up as a Solution

Think about your partner’s perspective here. They may have been hurt in a past relationship and want to end things before getting hurt again. Or, they might prefer to run from problems instead of addressing them. They might also just have a dramatic streak.

By talking to your partner, you can get a better idea of why they have this response. Approach this conversation free of judgment. Allow them to express their side of the story so you can begin working on a solution. Accept that this conversation may lead to you breaking up, so be prepared for this outcome.

Decide if Breaking up is Best

If your partner is always talking about breaking up, that may be for the best. Even if it’s not what you want.

Understand that they may only be staying with you because you’re putting in the effort to make things work. Relationships are a two-way street. If one person is putting in all the work, then things are bound to fall apart eventually.

Consider how happy you are in the relationship. Do you not seem to get along anymore? Does your relationship largely consist of disagreements and fighting? If so, it may be time to have this hard conversation and move on.

If your partner wants to break up after every fight, this isn’t a great sign for the future. While you should try to resolve the issues you’re fighting over, the writing may be on the wall.

Communicate how you feel with your partner. If you can’t work things out, accept that breaking up may be what’s best for both of you.
